CONFESSION
2020

In the months following the murder of George Floyd and and the shooting of Jacob Blake in 2020, I had a conversation with my priest Kara about my own silence and the silence of the church regarding institutional racism. The result was an installation outside St. John’s, a font with a water pump that ran in intervals of on for 8m46s and off for 8m46s. The font was mounted on seven 9mm bullet shells. Our church, St. John’s, put the following words on a sign in front of the font:

We lament the church’s role in institutional racism.
We repent our part in sustaining structures of racism.
We resolve to repair the damage done.
